About This Percentage Calculator
This free percentage calculator handles the six most common percentage problems: finding X% of Y, working out what percent X is of Y, percentage increase or decrease, discounts, adding or subtracting a percentage, and finding the original number from a percentage. All results update instantly as you type. It runs entirely in your browser, so no data is sent anywhere.

The Six Calculators
- What is X% of Y: 15% of 200 = 30
- X is what % of Y: 30 is what percent of 200 = 15%
- Percentage change: From 100 to 150 = +50% increase
- Discount: 20% off 1,000 = 800 (you save 200)
- Add or subtract a percentage: 3,000 + 18% = 3,540, and 3,000 − 18% = 2,460
- X is Y% of what number: 30 is 15% of 200
Common Percentage Formulas
- X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y
- X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
- Percentage change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100
- Final price after a discount = Original × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
- Add a percentage: New = Old × (1 + X ÷ 100)
- Original number = Part ÷ (Percent ÷ 100)
If the starting value is negative, the percentage change is measured against its absolute value, so a move from −100 to −50 counts as a 50% increase.

Common Use Cases
1. Shopping Discounts
A jacket is PKR 5,000 with 30% off. What's the final price? The Discount Calculator shows 3,500, so you save 1,500. Works for every sale, coupon, and promotion.
2. Adding Sales Tax
In Pakistan the standard sales tax rate on most goods is 18%. Use "Add or Subtract a Percentage" with 10,000 and 18%: the tax is 1,800 and the total is 11,800. Services are taxed separately by the provinces and some goods have special rates, so check the rate that applies to your item.
3. Removing Tax From a Price That Includes It
If a bill of PKR 11,800 includes 18% tax, the price before tax is 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = 10,000. In the "X is Y% of what number?" calculator, enter 11,800 and 118, because the total is 118% of the pre-tax price.
4. Grade and Exam Scores
You scored 87 out of 100. What percentage is that? Use "X is what % of Y": 87 ÷ 100 × 100 = 87%. Works for any score-to-percentage conversion.
5. Business Growth Analysis
Revenue grew from PKR 500,000 to PKR 750,000. What's the growth rate? Use the Percentage Change calculator: ((750,000 − 500,000) ÷ 500,000) × 100 = 50% growth.
6. Tip Calculations
If a restaurant bill is PKR 2,500 and you want to tip 15%, use "X% of Y": 15% of 2,500 = 375. Total to pay: 2,875.
7. Interest and Investment Returns
An investment grew from PKR 100,000 to PKR 125,000. The Percentage Change calculator shows a +25% return. The same formula works for loss percentages.
8. Price Comparison
One shop sells at PKR 1,200 with 15% off, another at PKR 1,100 with 10% off. Use the Discount Calculator for both: 1,020 versus 990. The second shop is the better deal.
9. Sales Commission
A salesperson earns 3% commission on a PKR 800,000 sale. Use "X% of Y": 3% of 800,000 = 24,000. Works for any commission structure.
A Worked Example
Here's a shopping scenario that uses several of the calculators:
- Sale price: A PKR 4,000 item is 25% off, so the final price is 3,000 and you save 1,000
- Tax on the sale: 18% tax on 3,000 = 540
- Total to pay: 3,000 + 540 = 3,540 (or 3,000 plus 18% in the Add or Subtract calculator)
- Saving: You saved 1,000 against the original price, which is 25%
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between percentage and percent?
They mean the same thing. "Percent" (per cent) literally means "per hundred." "Percentage" is the noun form, as in "calculate the percentage."
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Example: 100 to 150 gives (50 ÷ 100) × 100 = 50% increase.
How do I calculate percentage decrease?
The same formula works. If the new value is lower, the result is negative. Example: 150 to 100 gives (−50 ÷ 150) × 100 = −33.33%, a decrease of 33.33%.
What's the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
Percentage points measure the simple difference between two percentages (5% to 8% is a 3 percentage point increase). Percentage change measures the relative difference: (8 − 5) ÷ 5 × 100 = 60% change.
How do I add a percentage to a number?
Multiply the number by (1 + percent ÷ 100). Example: adding 18% to 3,000 gives 3,000 × 1.18 = 3,540. To subtract a percentage, multiply by (1 − percent ÷ 100) instead.
How do I find the original price before a discount or tax?
Divide the final amount by the fraction that remains. If a price after 20% off is 800, the original is 800 ÷ 0.80 = 1,000. If a price already includes 18% tax, divide it by 1.18. The "X is Y% of what number?" calculator does this for you.
Can I calculate discounts on multiple items?
Yes. Use the Discount Calculator once per item. For a cart with several discounted items, calculate each final price, then add them together.
Is this tool free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup, and has no limits.
